World Tour back in Sofia for a fourth-time
International beach volleyball is returning to Sofia for a fourth and final time in 2021 as the Bulgarian capital is set to host another FIVB World Tour one-star event this week from August 5-8.

Krasilnikov & Stoyanovskiy to take on Cherif & Ahmed in Olympic semis
Reigning world champions Viacheslav Krasilnikov and Oleg Stoyanovskiy of ROC progressed to the semifinals of the Tokyo 2020 men’s Olympic beach volleyball tournament after a straight-set victory over Germany’s Julius Thole and Clemens Wickler. Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan will be their next opponents in the battle for a spot in Saturday’s final. The Qataris outplayed Italy’s Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo in Wednesday’s last quarterfinal at Shiokaze Park.

Women's semifinals for Tokyo set in historic fashion
Taliqua Clancy didn’t necessarily want to, as she said, “toot our own horn,” but sometimes a player must come to terms with the fact that she is in the Olympic semifinals, and maybe it’s time to acknowledge that getting there might mean that “we are one of the best teams in the world,” the Australian blocker said. “Everybody is, that’s why it’s the Olympics.”

Herrera & Gavira hope to give another Olympics a try
Athens 2004 silver medallist Pablo Gavira has just finished his fifth Olympic participation. At 39, he does not exclude the possibility of playing at Paris 2024. “First we have to qualify… The level is crazy!” he told Volleyball World just after he and his long-time partner Adrian Gavira lost their Tokyo 2020 round of 16 match to Viacheslav Krasilnikov and Oleg Stoyanovskiy of ROC in a hard-fought battle.

Latvians dethrone another Olympic champ to make Tokyo semis
Latvia, a small central European country of about two million people, will have its representatives in both the women’s and the men’s beach volleyball semifinals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. A day after Tina Graudina and Anastasija Kravcenoka booked their spot among the best four of the ladies’ tournament, their compatriots Martins Plavins and Edgars Tocs did the same on the men’s side. In one of Wednesday’s morning quarterfinals, they eliminated none other than the team of defending Olympic champion Alison Cerutti and his Brazilian partner Alvaro Filho.
